The pre-wedding rituals in Gujarati weddings include sagai (engagement), mandap mahurat (pooja that takes place at both the bride's and groom's house), griha shanti (date fixing for the wedding based on zodiac signs of the bride and groom), garba (traditional Gujarati dance ceremony), pithi (turmeric application ceremony which takes place at both the bride's and groom's a day before the wedding.
On the day of the wedding, several ceremonies are conducted and they include barat (arrival of the groom on the horse), ponkhana (welcoming of the groom and his family), Ganesh pooja (prayers to Lord Ganesh to invoke his blessings), jaimala (exchange of garlands), kanya dhan (giving away of the bride to the groom by her father), hasta milap (the upper garment or stole worn by the groom is tied with the saree of the bride to signify meeting of the souls), mangal pheres (the couple circle the holy fire four times promising to be together praying for good health, prosperity, love and loyalty), saptapadi (groom helps bride to touch 7 betel nuts with her right toe), sindoor daan (application of sindoor and tying of the mangalsutra), kansar (the couple feed each other sweets) and finally the newlyweds seen the blessings of the elders in the family by touching their feet.
Post wedding rituals include vidaai (send off to the bride from her family home to her new family) and ghar nu laxmi which involves welcoming of the bride into her new home where she touches the steel vessel filled with rice with her foot to signify the prosperity she brings with her to her new home.
