Delhi Hindu Matrimony Ceremonies
Hindu wedding rituals are full of grandeur and magnificence. It can cast a spell on anybody witnessing these rituals. Loyalty towards their age-old customs and traditions are one of the most striking features of these weddings. There are many pre-wedding and post wedding ceremonies.
The most important pre-wedding ritual is the engagement ceremony, known as the Mangni or Sagai. The engagement features the exchange of rings between the bride and groom. This is followed by an exchange of gifts between the families as a symbol of acceptance of marriage alliance.
Following the engagement is the Mehndi ceremony during which intricate designs of pious Henna paste is applied to the arms and legs of the bride. The Sangeet ceremony then takes place to celebrate this occasion of coming together of two souls. The celebrations include a complete musical bash by the whole family. The final pre-wedding ritual is the Haldi ceremony which includes the application of ground turmeric paste along with mustard oil on the body of the bride and groom before taking the ceremonial bath.
On the wedding day, the groom along with his procession or Baraat sets off for the wedding venue. The bride's father treats the groom with yogurt and honey and graciously welcomes him in. This is followed by exchanging of garlands, commonly referred to as the Jaimala which is a symbol of accepting one another.
The ceremonial fire or Havan is the center point for all the marriage rituals as fire is regarded as a purifying element in Hindu rituals. Then comes the most heart-warming ritual of Hindu tradition the kanyadaan which means giving away of his daughter to the groom by the bride's father. The couple then offers puffed rice or Lajhom to the fire. The ritual that follows is the Gath Bandhan, i.e the tying of the nuptial knot. Following this, the bride and groom take seven rounds around the fire symbolizing the seven wedding vows. This is known as the Saat Phere or Mangal Phere. The wedding is concluded by application of vermillion on center parting off bride and tying of malgalsutra.
The post-wedding rituals include the Vidai which signifies the farewell of the bride from her paternal home and beginning of her journey to her new home. On reaching the groom's house the couple is welcomed by the groom's mother and bride enters the home by turning a brass pot filled with rice. This is known as Grihpravesh.
Delhi Muslim Matrimony Ceremonies
Muslim weddings start with the Istikhara ritual during which the religious heads of the Muslim community come together to pray to Allah and seek his consent and blessings for the commencement of the wedding. This is followed by the Imam-Zamin ritual during which the groom's mother ties a silver or gold coin on the bride's wrist. Then there is an exchange of rings between the couple which is known as Mangini.
After the engagement, the Manjha and the Mehendi ceremonies take place which bears close similarities to the Hindu pre-wedding rituals. In the Mehendi ceremony, artistic henna designs are applied on the bride's hands and feet.
On the wedding day, Nikah takes place in the presence of the Maulvi. He recites prayers from the Quran and asks the bride if she agrees to marry the groom with the pre-decided Meher. The question is asked thrice and if she agrees, the same is repeated with the groom. This ritual is known as Ijab-e-Qubul (proposal and acceptance). This is followed by the signing of the Nikahnama (marriage contract) by the couple. All the elders now bless the newly married couple.
The post-wedding ritual includes Ruksat which is similar to vidai of Hindu weddings and Wallimah which is a marriage reception party thrown by the groom's family.
Delhi Sikh Matrimony Ceremonies
The pre-wedding rituals are moreover similar among Hindu and Sikh communities of Delhi. The main difference is observed in the actual wedding ceremony. The weddings among Sikh communities takes place in the morning instead of the night as in case of Hindu. A typical Sikh wedding starts with Ardaas in Gurudwara and ends with the couple taking four rounds around the sacred book of Sikhs the Guru Granth Sahib. This is known as the Lavan phere. This is followed by a grand Reception for the couple.
Delhi Christian Matrimony Ceremonies
Just like in other communities the Christian weddings also start with the engagement ceremony but the difference being that only the groom gifts the ring to the bride which she wears on her left hand. This is followed by bridal shower during which the bride's family plays a number of games shower the bride with gifts. A similar event is also observed at groom's house where it is known as Bachelor's party.
On the morning of the wedding day, female relatives of the groom visit the bride's home with her bridal outfits, jewelry, trays of sweets and fruits. Then a wedding mass is organized at the church which includes prayers and hymns performed by the priest. After this, the bride and groom are asked to utter the vows of marriage. The marriage is then solemnized by exchanging wedding rings. Then the couple marches down from the dais to seek blessings from the elders.
Post wedding events include reception party and farewell of bride similar to Vidai.
