Welcome to Tamil Nadu Matrimony, a free matrimony portal for those living in the state of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu is a state in the southern part of India. Tamil Nadu means the land of the Tamils. It is the eleventh largest state in India according to area and the sixth-most populous. The official language is Tamil which is one the oldest classical languages in the world.
Tamil weddings are usually diverse with different wedding traditions observed among different communities. However, some rituals overlap in all Hindu Tamil weddings. The wedding ceremony is conducted in the early hours of the morning and the reception is conducted in the evening on the same day. The traditions of a Tamil wedding are reflective of the Dravidian heritage.
The Tamil non-Brahmin weddings differ in some ways from the Brahmin weddings. In the non-Brahmin weddings, a ceremony called Nichyadartham where the bride seeks blessings of Lord Ganesha is conducted and the wedding is finalized after conducting an engagement ceremony. During this ceremony, the groom’s family gifts saris and jewelry to the bride. After this, Panda Kaal Muhurtam occurs where both families go out and seek the blessings of God so that no obstacles arise in the wedding. On the day of the wedding, both the families observe a fast before the actual marriage ceremony and this is called the Vratham. Nandi is where the families seek blessings from their ancestors, while Janavasam is where the groom comes to the venue in a car.
In a Tamil Brahmin wedding, the rituals followed would include Nichyadartham, Vratham, Janavasam, KasiYatrai and Kanyadanam. KasiYatrai is a unique and interesting Brahmin tradition where the groom decides to take sanyasam (sacrifice all worldly pleasures) and leaves the venue and the father of the bride convinces the groom against it. Kanyadanam is an important part of the ceremony where the girl’s parents give away the hand of their daughter in marriage to the groom. Traditionally the marriage ends with a lot of games between the bride and the groom such as finding a ring in a bucket of water and feeding each other delicacies prepared for the wedding. After the wedding, both the families visit a nearby temple to seek blessings of the Lord.
