The most common feature of a wedding among any of the community of Uttar Pradesh is the presence of vibrant colors, house full of relatives and friends, and a celebration having its own distinct flavor.
Hindu (79.23%) and Muslims (19.26%) are the two major communities residing in Uttar Pradesh. So, let's witness the fun-filled rituals of marriages in different communities of Uttar Pradesh.
Pre Marriage
You will find a long joint family system in Uttar Pradesh, where the elder of the family chooses mates for the children in the family. Once, the alliance is approved by the elder of the family, following rituals mark the wedding celebration.
Rokka - This ritual signifies a commitment between the families to have a marriage alliance between their children. In other words, we can say that the boy and the girl get committed to each other. During this ritual, gifts are exchanged between the families and the bride's father gives a certain amount of cash as Shagun to the groom.
Mangni (The Engagement) - It marks the formal acceptance of the alliance by both the families, in front of all the relatives and friends. As a mark of this acceptance, wedding rings are exchanged between the bride and the groom during this ceremony.
Chunri Chadan - This ritual signifies the blessings showered by the mother in law of the bride on her. It takes place a few days before the marriage. During this ritual, the groom's mother along with few female relatives visits the Bride's houses with a plate of Shagun. She puts a red colored Chunri decorated with bright stones and embroidery on the bride's head. Then she gifts a set of red bangles to the bride, which is meant to be worn by her on the Wedding Day.
Sangeet - This is a musical celebration of the marriage, which takes place a day before the main wedding day. During this ceremony, the ladies in the house sings folk wedding songs. While in a modernized version of this function, a full musical bash is organized jointly by both the families to celebrate the occasion.
Mehandi - Mehendi is one of the important traditions of marriage in India. It is applied on the hands and feet of the bride a day before the marriage. Other ladies of the family also decorate their hands with mehendi.
Wedding Day
Chuda Ceremony - In the morning of the wedding day, the in-laws of the bride present her wedding dress (red saree) to the bride. The bride has to wear this dress at the time of the marriage ceremony.
Sehrabandi & Ghodi Chadna - In the evening, the wedding procession from the Groom's side sets off to the wedding venue. The groom sits on a beautifully decorated mare and everyone from the groom's family goes dancing and singing with full enthusiasm. On reaching, the threshold of the wedding venue the Groom and his relatives are welcomed with a shower of rose petals and perfume by the bride's side.
Varmala and Phera Ceremony - After welcoming of the wedding procession, the Groom is taken to the stage. As soon as the bride arrives, the Garlands are exchanged between the couple. This ritual is known as Varmala Ceremony. After this, the bride and the groom take their places at the Mandap. The priest lit the fire in the Havan Kund and the bride's father performs the ritual of Kanyadaan, during this ritual, the father gives away the responsibilities of her daughter to the groom. This is followed by saat pheras (seven pious rounds of marriage) around the holy fire, and Saptapadi during which the couple takes seven steps together by making seven promises of married life to each other. After this ritual, the Sindoor Daan is performed during which the groom applies vermillion powder at the hair parting of the bride.
Post Marriage
Vidaai - It's a very heart touching moment during, which the bride heavy-heartedly leaves her paternal home and sets off for her new life.
Grih Pravesh - When the bride reaches her new home, she receives a warm welcome from the groom's family. According to traditions, the couple first worships the family deity and then enters the threshold.

Ishtikhara - This is one of the most important rituals among Muslims. During this ritual, the religious heads of the community pray to Allah for seeking his consent and blessings for the upcoming marriage ceremony. Following this, the mother of the groom visits the bride’s house for the ritual of Imam-zamin during which she ties a silver or gold coin on the upper hand of the bride.
Mangani Ritual - This is similar to the engagement ceremony among Hindu community. During this ceremony, gifts are exchanged between the families following which the couple exchanges the wedding ring.
Manjha and Mehendi - In this ritual, the bride wears yellow colored clothes and all the married ladies of the family take their turn to apply a paste of Haldi (turmeric) on her face and body. On the evening of the same day, the hands and the legs of the bride are decorated with beautiful designs of Heena. The whole family concludes this ceremony amidst of music and celebration.
Sanchaq Ritual - During this ritual, the groom’s family sends the wedding dress and ornaments which the would-be-bride is supposed to wear during the Nikah(wedding).
Reception of the Baraat - According to Muslim traditions, the groom and the wedding procession are welcomed with sherbet and the brother of the bride escorts the groom inside the venue.
Nikah ceremony - The Nikah is conducted in the presence of Maulvi who narrates the verses from Quran to bless the couple. Then the amount of Mehr for the bride is decided, following which the Maulvi asks the bride for her consent for the alliance, he repeats this question three times and once the bride agrees then he asks the same question to the groom. This ritual is known as Ijab-e-Qubul. The marriage concludes with the signing of the marriage contract by the couple.
