Welcome to West Bengal Matrimony, a free matrimony portal for those living in the state of West Bengal.
West Bengal is a state in the eastern part of India on the Bay of Bengal. It is the fourth most populous state in India. West Bengal is religiously diverse. Hindus form the majority of the population followed by Muslims.
The Bengali Hindu wedding is a vibrant event with various rituals conducted over several days. The pre-wedding rituals include ashirbaad (seeking blessings and exchange of ornaments), gaye holud (application of turmeric to bride and groom in separate ceremonies at their respective houses), dodhi mongol (adorning the bride's hands with traditional red and white bangles and feeding of rice and yogurt).
The main wedding ceremony includes bor boron (welcoming the groom by the bride's mother), potto bastra (giving new clothes to the groom), saat paak (encircling the sacred fire with the bride seated on a wooden stool which is lifted by her brothers), mala badal (exchange of garlands), subho drishti (the bride is asked to remove the betel leaves and take a look at the groom), sampradan (handing over of the bride to the groom by an elderly male of the bride's family), yagna (chanting of hymns in front of the fire), saat pak (couple go around the fire seven times to solemnize the wedding), anjali (puffed rice offering to the fire), sindoor daan (application of sindoor) and ghomta (brides covers her head with the new saree gifted by her husband after application of sindoor).
The post wedding rituals include bidaye (farewell to the bride), kaal ratri (bride and groom are separated for the night), bou bhaat and bodu boron (bride cooks for the family the next day and is given gifts from the family), phool sajja (the couple's bed is arranged with flowers and they are allowed to enjoy conjugal bliss).
For a Muslim wedding, the pre wedding rituals include mangni (engagement ceremony) and mehndi (application of henna tattoo on the bride's hands and feet). The wedding ceremony encompasses the kazi (person authorized by the government to perform the wedding) asking the bride and groom, who are seated separately and accompanied by the parents and a witness from each side, for their consent to the marriage. The amount of mahr or dowry is verified after this and the formal papers are signed. After the completion of the formalities the couple are seated beside each other and the bride's veil is draped over both their heads and a mirror is placed in front of them. The groom is supposed to say something romantic when he sees the mirror which is supposed to be the first time he would see his bride. Traditionally the groom says he has seen the moon. The couple then feed each other sweets and they celebrate the union with a feast of traditional cuisine.
